English is the world’s first truly global language, spoken in more places and by more people than any other language in history. In a global context, Norwegian is – obscure….

Here is a selection of words that either have same origin as or are borrowed from English language. Noticing these similarities can help you learn and understand Norwegian a little faster.

 

Same words and same meaning:

finger

glass

ski

atom

under “d” is silent

eksamen “exam”

person

burger

 

On the other hand, when you come across a Norwegian word that look similar to English, it may have a completely different meaning. These are called homonyms.

Arrangement – event

Art – species

Trøkk – punch or push

Gift –   married or poison

Roman – novel
