Test structure

The total time for the test is just under 2 hours, and it is made up of four sections:

IELTS Academic

Test Format Computer or paper-based, with mainly multiple-choice questions. Computer or paper-based, with various question types.
Scoring Total score of 120. Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections each scored out of 30. Total score of 9. Each section is scored out of 9 then averaged to give an overall band score.
Speaking Section 16 minutes. Taken on the same day as the other sections Responses are recorded and sent to ETS for human/AI assessment. 11-14 minutes. May or may not be taken on the same day. Conducted as a face-to-face or video call interview with an examiner.
Writing Section 30 minutes. Watch a short lecture and read a text, then write a response. Next state and support an opinion in an online classroom discussion. 60 minutes. One 150-word descriptive analysis of a graph or chart. One 250-word opinion-based essay.
Listening Section 36 minutes. 3 lectures with 6 questions each, 2 conversations with 5 questions each. All parts in an educational context. 30 minutes. 4 parts with 10 questions each, 2 parts in everyday English. 2 parts in an educational context.
Reading Section 35 minutes. 2 academic texts and 20 questions Total of ~1400 words. Primarily multiple-choice questions . 60 minutes. 3 academic/ general texts and 40 questions. Total of 2150-2750 words. A range of question types.
Duration Just under 2 hours. Around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Test Availability Offered in more than 150 countries, with over 50 tests per year. Offered in over 140 countries, with 48 tests per year.
